By Sam Kong
I started working as a temporary church staff in November 2022. Working in a church environment has its unique challenges and rewards, and I’ve gained valuable insights into what it takes to plan and run successful events.
Lessons Learned
One of the first things I learned is that the church is a busy place with many events and activities to coordinate. From major celebrations (Easter, Christmas) to youth groups and prayer meetings, each ministry has its own events that require detailed planning. To ensure that everything runs smoothly, it is essential to have a system in place to manage the events efficiently.
This system includes: 1) knowing who is responsible for the event; 2) drawing clear lines of communication; 3) delegating tasks to different team members; and 4) ensuring all team members know clearly their roles and duties. By working together and sharing manpower, we can ensure that each event is executed successfully and that no one is overwhelmed.
Audio visual (AV) equipment plays a significant role in many events, making it necessary to know how to use and set up sound and video systems. Being familiar with AV equipment ensures that events run smoothly, and everyone can hear and see well.
It is also crucial to maintain the church building itself. Yeah, God will take care of everything but we need to do the hard work of keeping the church building functioning and welcoming. Cleaning, maintenance, repairs, and renovations are necessary to ensure the church is a safe and comfortable place for everyone.
Reflections
Ultimately, we have to turn to God for strength and wisdom. With so many events and activities to plan and coordinate, it is easy to become overwhelmed and stressed. Relying on God for guidance and strength keeps us focused and centred, and everything we do serves His greater mission.
I am grateful to be blessed by church members for their generosity in blessing the church with lots of gifts and food. The support and encouragement from the church community make it worthwhile and reinforce the value of serving in a church environment. Working in a church is not just a job, but a calling to be part of a community that strives to make a positive difference in the world.
In conclusion, working in a church can be challenging, but the rewards are fulfilling. As I continue to serve in this unique and special environment, I look forward to continuing to learn, grow, and contribute to the church’s mission and purpose. I will always remember the valuable lessons I have learned.
Reminder
Finally, I am reminded of the importance of hope and prayers for the church community. It is essential to pray for the church leaders, members, and volunteers who work tirelessly to ensure that the church remains a place of warm welcome and hope for all who come through our doors.
Get Involved
🙏 Pray that God will remind the church leaders, members, staff and volunteers who work behind the scenes that their labor is not in vain.
