The format of Alpha involves watching a video on the big issues of life and faith over topics such as “Who is Jesus?” and “How does God guide you?” followed by a discussion time in the breakout groups. It essentially creates a space where people from any walk of life are welcomed for a conversation about faith, life, and God.
When Alpha was brought up during the Sunday services at the earlier part of this year, I found myself thinking about getting involved. June came and the call was made for young adults to get involved. I took the plunge and made a 9-week commitment. Nonetheless, as with most acts of service, I gained more from Alpha than what I gave.
As first-timer Alpha helpers, we were given the observer’s role in running the weekly programme. The intention was for us to learn from the more experienced Alpha facilitators and learning from them was indeed what I got.
The enthusiasm and dedication from the more experienced generation of Alpha facilitators was encouraging. Week in, week out, they offered their unwavering support, listening ears and fervour through prayer and much time spent with the Alpha participants. They really embodied the spirit of the following verse, appreciating the gravity of each soul saved:
“I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”
– Luke 15:7
It was also invaluable to get to know more people across the church community and to serve alongside them. This included the non-facilitators but members of the church who accompanied their friends to Alpha.
Having said all the above, it must be acknowledged that only by God’s grace could all of us serve so passionately in the Alpha programme. So, all praise and glory to Him and may we continuously long for the Holy Spirit to work in us and through us!
