Together with two friends, and with some curiosity, I attended the event at PJEFC on Sept. 11, September 2024. Attendees were invited to submit a song in advance to the organisers who would play the song, and the participant would then share the significance of the song.
The attendees comprised church seniors and others, including pre-believers, from other JOY activities, such as Sit-Down Exercise and the weekly mahjong sessions.
I was a little surprised, but delighted, by the good attendance and the level of participation of those who came. Bonded by a love for music and songs, we blended as one and the joint singing and sharing of testimonies/memories and raucous laughter added to the convivial atmosphere. The stories were as varied as the songs and my attempts to second-guess the story based on the song were far from successful, which made the session even more interesting!
As we reflected on this event, my friends and I were blessed in myriad ways:
- Much loved hymns, such as “It is well with my soul” ministered to and encouraged our souls, to be reminded that we can transcend our grief and losses when we know Christ who gives us eternal life;
- Lighted-hearted Cantonese songs and various pop songs provided delectable memories of years gone by;
- Some testimonies/stories shed fresh light on friends that we have known for years;
- A duet by two cousins underscored that it is never too late to cultivate new skills, e.g. learning to play the guitar (this sister picked it up in two years!); and
- Heart-rending songs and stories, e.g. “Mother” by John Lennon, were accompanied by appropriate ministry of prayers and encouragement by sister Lai Sheong.
The salutary event ended with the hymn “Along the Road”. It was a fitting reminder that the Lord gives us joy and makes the darkest night shine. His presence helps us to traverse steep mountains through valleys dark and cold.
Kudos to the JOY committee for their creativity, love and passion for reaching out to the seniors through events such as this.
