OF SUPER-COMPETITIVE LEADERS AND COMMITTED LEADERS AT BOARD RETREAT

By David Chong

On the way to the PJEFC board retreat, Ps Yu Yong’s advice was simple: “Focus on getting to know the leaders.” I had no idea this would lead to late-night coffee, witnessing a “super-competitive” game, and sparking many ideas for ministry work. It was an invitation from deacon Gilbert Hooi that opened the door to this unexpected retreat.

We had plenty of opportunities to fellowship over meals and coffee. I also managed to get to know my roommate, Ps Daniel Jimmy, better. It wasn’t just about fellowship, but learning from one another. Over short meals, I could sense the deep wisdom and wealth of experience of some leaders.

Peeking behind the curtain of the church’s inner workings was insightful, deepening my understanding of the various ministries, each with its own challenges and opportunities. Some are struggling to grow, while others are growing so fast that they lack space to meet.

This retreat was special because we were also planning for the next 6 years of the church. We had many brainstorming sessions that sparked numerous ideas for my own ministry.

And then there were the games. The retreat’s lighter moments revealed a side of the leaders I hadn’t seen. Their competitive spirit was… extra. Picture this: a grown man climbing on a chair in excitement. “Super-competitive” took on a whole new meaning and brought much laughter.

Overall, the PJEFC board retreat was a refreshing experience that left me with a deeper appreciation for the church’s inner workings.
