BOARD OR FAMILY RETREAT?

I have never stepped foot in PJEFC’s Sunday worship service before and yet I had a delightfully eye-opening experience as an observer in PJEFC’s board retreat. It felt like a family retreat where we have different siblings that talk differently and act differently, yet get along well because we are in the same family of God.

I am privileged to observe the inner workings of the church leadership and the healthy dynamics and diversity displayed when we were together over the 3 days in Genting. I’m Joshua Tong, the new pastor joining PJEFC on October 1, 2023.

Attending the board retreat gave me a preview of the church’s behind-the-scene processes and a bird’s eye view of the church’s health. If you are invited to be an observer, I highly recommend you to go with an open heart to learn and see what God is doing at the core of PJEFC.

Over the 3 days of being together, I saw the outworking of Romans 12:4, 6: “For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function… Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them…”

Simon and Wai Yin attended this retreat as observers as well but they helped to organise team-building activities that transformed us from dignified adults into child-like, competitive kids when we played and laughed together. Foo Wei gave clarity and accountability with regards to the church’s financial health and its utilisation.

The elders were united, loving, and gave valuable insights and details into what is happening at the oversight level to encourage the pastors as they each gave an account of the ministries they lead. The deacons were on the ball with a plan to actively address various issues so that the church can be more effective in order to keep the main thing, the main thing. The pastors have a growth mindset in planning and cultivating the members to grow spiritually and numerically as well.

Above all, we gathered to worship and pray together, knowing full well that “unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labour in vain” (Psalm 127:1). The priority and preeminence of God among us is honoured among the leaders of PJEFC.

I am so blessed to know that the PJEFC family is in good hands.
