Recently, I joined the JOY Ministry Malaysian Chinese Museum. The museum gave a documented journey of the Chinese immigration to Malaya. It tells the history of how the various Chinese ethnic groups came over in waves to this land, now known as Malaysia. It shows their involvement in the different periods and eras of Malaysian history and their contribution to both the economic and social development of our country.
The tour was a nostalgic journey and reminded me of my childhood days. The familiar rubber sheet roller reminded me of where I occasionally played in my younger days and made me better appreciate the importance of that machine which helped my family and our rubber tapper workers earn a living to support their families. As I walked through the gallery, it brought back memories long forgotten. The old coffee shop took me back to the times when my father and I bonded over dim sum, and where people gathered to have coffee and tea after a hard day’s work.
The museum is both informative and educational. It tells stories of our ancestors and the harsh and lonely life of migrant workers cut off from their loved ones. Here, I felt immensely proud and grateful to our forefathers for their hardship and sufferings, and most of all, for their sacrificial love for the generations to come so that we may enjoy the labour of their fruits today.
It was a touching journey down memory lane for me. I recommend those who want to learn more about our ancestors and our heritage to visit this museum.
