SIMPLE WAYS TO SHINE IN THE MARKETPLACE

By Evan Wong

Elder Tham Kong Weng was invited to share his thoughts and experiences about being a Christian leader in the marketplace with the Young Adults Ministry on 3 September 2022.

As a young adult working in a professional space dominated by people of a different faith, I found attempting to be ‘salt and light’ in my workplace to be a particularly difficult and unnerving task. This is probably because opportunities to discuss religion rarely arise and even if they do, there is a constant worry of being seen as needlessly overzealous. I therefore found Elder Kong Weng’s sharing to be encouraging because, as is true with other matters of self-expression, actions speak louder than words. I learnt that we don’t need a heavy theological discussion in place to demonstrate our Christian leadership; rather, Christian leadership can be demonstrated through simple gestures of workplace professionalism.

Elder Kong Weng shared that when working with a colleague that many others found “difficult”, he reached out to the said colleague and expressed his desire to work for the betterment of the project and that any disagreements they might potentially have should be centred on that main focus. Through this approach, he did not find the colleague to be as “difficult” as others said; in fact, the colleague appreciated Elder for  communicating well with him throughout the project.

The lesson learnt here is that we can demonstrate Christian leadership by intentionally treating all colleagues with kindness and respect. This probably requires no small effort, but I believe the effort will be worth the while as we leave a lasting impression of Christian values on our colleagues.
