In March 2019, I had a health scare. A red spot appeared on a PET scan on the rectal area where a tumour was first discovered 5 years ago. I was stunned. The doctor and I were not expecting this. On all my previous check ups, there was nothing there. The next 3 weeks was an ordeal. Six more trips to the hospital – more tests, more reports, and finally a MRI on the red spot to determine the next course of action. By then, both Suan and I were physically and emotionally exhausted. Throughout, family and Board members and pastors whom I shared with, prayed for me. During this time, I had a “thin places” experience.

I first heard of “thin places”, a Celtic idea, from Tom Alexander’s sermon a month earlier. In the Celtic tradition, heaven and earth is about 3 feet apart. But in “thin places”, the distance is significantly reduced.

Heaven and earth came together for me during this time. Suddenly, things became unusually clear. Viewed from heaven’s perspective, many things that routinely occupy my time and energy suddenly became unimportant. For example, I have allowed petty issues in the church to somehow bother me. Some things do really matter – my relationship with Jesus, with family members, board members and pastors. And these matter in PJEFC – discipleship, leaders’ and pastors’ development, care for needy members, mission and church planting, undergirded by prayers.
While waiting for my MRI results, I surrendered my life to God and prayed that He may enable me to glorify Him for 10 more years.

In Colossians 3:1-3 the apostle Paul instructs the believers “to seek the things that are above where Christ is … ; to set their minds on things above, not on earthly things.” In the NIV it says, “… set your hearts on things above …”

“To seek” or “to set our mind on” implies aspiration, desire and passion. It has something to do with what the heart wants. The mind is very powerful. It dictates how we live our lives and how we deal with situations.

So, it’s no wonder that when Paul turns from the theological to the practical in Colossians 3, he focuses first on the mind. As disciples of Christ, we are to stop thinking about earthly things and focus our thoughts on heavenly things. When we concentrate on our jobs, our ministry, etc. we are to do all these from a heavenly perspective. Because “the best Christian living comes from minds that are fixed on heaven.”

Satan is always attacking the disciples’ mind with doubts, fears and worldly thoughts. He wants to keep us from focusing on what really matters, and that is, God and His kingdom.
As disciples of Christ, let us “fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:18).
Well, the MRI showed no tumor. Puzzled, the doctor said, “I cannot operate if there is nothing there to operate on” and prescribed another PET scan in a year’s time. I believe God has healed me for this season of my life.

Lord, may You discipline me, a disciple of Christ, to set my mind on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. To seek the things that are above, where Christ is. Amen.
